- The “Art for peace center” of Ein Hud
A call for peace to all artists may seem, today, something of rhetoric but we still believe at the moral responsibility of artists and we also want to believe in a place where everyone is free to express his struggle for peace…
++DETAILS ABOUT MASTERPLAN
The new MUNICIPAL LINE involve a territory of about 150 dunams.
The MAIN ROAD connecting ein hud to road n.4 pass through all the town and following in great part an actual unpaved road permit to reach the existing road near the entrance of the kibbutz with a short trip and without strong slopes, two parking areas are situated at the beginning and at the end of the built area
The area for housing expansion (dark grey) tries to “fill” as possible all the empty areas inside and around the old nucleus maintaining a strong aggregation of houses and people surrounded by large green areas (about the 40% of the land is a green area)
The location of secondary roads should remain almost the same of the actual situation, the private lots division and some changes in the locations of the streets must be decided only by the town council, we have not the authority (and the territorial knowledge) to decide some changes that may bring us to fight an imposition (the actual masterplan) with other impositions.
The schooling area (kindergarten and primary school is situated in a public green area using and converting as possible the existing improvised buildings.
The area at the top of the old village nucleus is reserved to commerce (in the part near the main street) and public buildings.
In the eastern area of the village will take place the “Ein Hud Art for peace center”: ten (or more) independent housing units will be used as ateliers by artists that will work on projects regarding the relationship between Israel and Palestine or the Peace in general.
It will be possible to launch an international competition to choose every year the artists that will live in Ein Hud organizing workshops and trying to find trough art and communications new ways of dialogue and cohabitation.
The planned area permits to increase the number of ateliers but also to use part of the area as housing expansion of the village, at the same time it’s possible to use some houses-ateliers as hostels or lodges for visitors and tourists.
The big green area at the top of the hill of ein hud will be used as EXIBITION AREA for permanent or temporary exhibition regarding artworks about the themes of peace and war, racism, violence and prejudice, cohabitation of different cultures etc.
The green exhibition area is organized as a long walk that pass through temporary installations and exhibitions at open air or inside two pavilions and end symbolically at the feet of the tower of peace at the top of the hill.
The TWO PAVILIONS will represent Israel and Palestine, it’s possible to organize a national competition to build each pavilion.
At the end of the long walk through analogies and differences is possible to reach the TOWER OF PEACE: an empty an lonely tower made by rusty iron panels, a metaphysic metaphor of our need of peace, the tower should remain an empty and almost forgotten space but is also possible to use it as permanent or temporary exhibition place or as a support for installation and happenings involving all the valley
MULTIFUNCTIONAL BUILDING
The area reserved to public buildings and commerce will be the real heart of ein hud not just for the location at the top of the old village nucleus but mainly for the conformation of the buildings.
It’s really difficult to define a type of traditional public architecture in arab villages inside israel, but according with the analisys of the Palestinian architect omar yuseff we can define the contemporary Palestinian architecture (and especially arab architecture in israel) as an “improvised architecture”, or also an “architecture without architects”
By this way it’s not possible to work on a big multifunctional building based on geometry and regularity but we have to create a system of small buildings with different functions connected each other just by small pedestrian roads.
The buildings, built by concrete and bricks are plastered by a mixture containing local sands, the colour and the irregularity of the hight will make think that these buildings are a part of the natural landscape, modern and ancient ruins surrounded by white houses.
The Market and commerce area is the meeting point of all the people of the village, it’s situated on the main road, the square may be used for temporary bazaars while some small shops of different hight and volume surround the square drawing always new shadows on the red soil.
The city council building contains a meeting room and the postal office used also as council office.
The Clinic is simply reachable also by the main road and consist of a waiting room, services, and an ambulatory
The Public hall is the main building of the multifunctional center: it contains:
- a meeting hall with internet point divided by the main hall by courtains that can be easily removed.
- A big hall for conferences, cinema or theatre, the hall can be divided in two parts: one part with fixed seats and a central flat part with removable seats where it’s also possible to organize parties, meetings or sports.
- Services and a big store for removable seats and lighting/audio systems
