- Public Gathering
'The first thing to do here is to specify what we mean by utopia: in its essence, utopia has nothing to do with imagining an impossible ideal society; what characterizes utopia is literally the construction of a utopic space, a social space outside the existing parameters of what appears to be 'possible' in the gesture which changes the coordinates of the possible.' - Slavoj Zizek, "Iraq: The Borrowed Kettle"
In a particular location in the village there is a vast plane of land reserved for special event. This plane is inserted into the fabric of the village and is purposefully not occupied by any structures or other elements to allow for Public Gathering. Public Gathering is a custom/ritual that keeps this village together and is important for village to survive. People get together on different occasions: birth, wedding, death of a community member, etc. They take group picture to commemorate this event. Thus, the plane becomes the essential large scale architectonic element that transcends the physical space and constructs the domain of the community. There is also a small scale element in this scheme - it is a stool.
How many things do you own? Do you own a car or a bicycle? Kitchen table and a basket? There will be one more thing that you will have to own - a stool. Not another kitchen stool, but a 'stool' for very special occasion. A stool for Public Gathering. This stool can be put together with other similar stools to form long bench. The Bench rows create a structure for Public Gathering...
The structure is assembled in levels or steps for people to gather upon. The idea behind this gathering is that people can develop and maintain a tradition/ritual of keeping together, and construct and record a history of their gathering in the form of a group photo. This gathering is essential for living in the village. Everybody is involved, because each and everyone in the village own a unit of the structure. This way, stool becomes a link between a person and the community. A stool and a plane transform into a survival tool, a weapon and a link in a process of constructing a new utopia. Assembling a structure is a ritual that can also become instrument of protest or a defense mechanism. At the time when the people of the village feel frightened or mistreated, they gather together on the spot reserved for it. Each comes carrying the stool and positions it next to its neighbor.
In the realm of surveillance society, there should be a possibility of public gathering for an alternative cause. Public Gathering starts building solutions and methods for public resilience.
